The Goal of These Exercises

The WebFacing Tool contains many more capabilities to enhance the user interface. This chapter provides exercises that you might want to go through selectively as you feel you need these capabilities.

I will start by showing you how to add your own HTML to the HTML generated by the WebFacing Tool. There are three different ways to add HTML with Web settings: you can (1) specify that HTML tags be inserted before, inside, or after the WebFacing generated HTML; (2) specify that you will provide the HTML from the RPG or COBOL program at run time; or (3) decide to tell the WebFacing tool not to generate HTML for a field and instead supply your own HTML.

I will show you how to add a pop-up calendar to your WebFaced user interface, and I will also show you where you can find more interesting controls to help you get the most out of WebFacing.

Web settings are also available on a record format level, to deal with command key labels and the command key order for individual record formats. In addition, you can add your own JavaScript to be run when the record format is displayed. If you work with secondary display size, you have the Display size Web Setting that you use to select the size for the WebFacing conversion.

I also address the problem of column heading alignment on subfiles, since you might encounter problems if your column headings are made up of a string that uses blanks to align the column heading with the subfile columns themselves .

I also explore how to add certain features to a WebFacing project template so that they are added automatically to all new WebFacing projects that you create.
