Chapter 6: Changing the Web User Interface

To enhance the results of the WebFacing Tool, IBM added a new function to the CODE Designer tool called Web settings. CODE Designer is the GUI-based screen design tool for 5250 panels. With this tool, you can change aspects of the user interface related to the WebFacing conversion process. CODE Designer stores the Web setting information as comment lines in the DDS source. When you convert the application using the WebFacing Tool, these DDS source comment lines are picked up and applied to the new user interface.

Tip

You cannot use Screen Design Aid (SDA) on DDS source members that have been customized through Web settings. This restriction is imposed because SDA changes the location of or deletes comment lines, which would invalidate the WebFacing Web settings.

The Goal of the Exercise

The goal of this exercise is for you to change the user interface of your Web-enabled application with CODE Designer. In the WebFacing perspective, you will select a DDS source member to work with, start CODE Designer to open this DDS member, use Web settings in CODE Designer, and then reconvert the DDS member.

At the end of this exercise, you should be able to

  • Access DDS source from the WebFacing perspective using CODE Designer

  • Use Web settings to change the Web-enabled user interface

  • Reconvert the altered DDS display file source member
