Downloading the DDS Keyword Survey Tool

The CD for this book contains a copy of the tool. However, you might want to make sure that it is the latest version; there is a possibility that the WebFacing development team has added more support to the tool in various Service Packs. The copy included with the book is based on WebFacing Version 5.0 capabilities.

Appendix C contains the readme file that comes with the tool; it can also be downloaded from the IBM Web site.

To check for the latest version of the DDS Keyword Survey Tool, I suggest you go to the main iSeries Application Development Tools Web page, since URLs further down in the Web hierarchy are changed frequently: ibm.com/software/awdtools/iseries.

From this Web page,

• Go to the WebSphere Development Studio Client page.

In the left side bar, you should see a context-sensitive menu bar that contains a support link:

• Click the support link.

• On the page you are directed to, search for Survey Tool.

The Search result page should show a link to the download page for the Survey Tool. IBM Web pages change frequently, so these instructions might eventually be out of date. However, if you search for the Survey Tool, you should be directed to the correct place.

Check the newest version; if there is newer version than yours available, use the download page to find this new version. The page contains the instructions about how to install the tool, and it contains a link to download the readme file for this tool as well.

• Read through the readme file and follow the instructions to FTP the Savefile containing the tool to your iSeries.

• Restore the Survey library.

• Add the Survey library to your library list, as shown in Figure 21.1.

• Use the Survey command to point to the library containing your display file DDS source.

• Run the tool and look at the spool file created by the tool, as shown in Figure 21.2:

The report will list

• Supported keywords by version level

• Support considered for future releases

• Support not prioritized (most likely will not be supported unless feedback from customers indicates that support is needed)

• Support not planned (IBM does not think these will ever be supported)

In general, the report shows you how much of your display file DDS is supported and what will and will not function after the WebFacing conversion is complete.

It also may give you an idea about different techniques you could use to change your DDS source yet still maintain the same results in a 5250 environment.

Many customers have told us they are not even aware that they use some of the keywords the Survey Tool lists. That is, the tool helps them clean up their DDS source to comply with internal standards before performing WebFacing conversion.
