Appendix A. The LXR Source-Code Browser

The Linux kernel in Version 2.4.9 consisted of 9,837 files, totaling to approximately 3,857,319 lines of source code. Even modifications from one version to the next comprise several megabytes. This volume of Linux source code makes it difficult to navigate to the desired place right away.

To facilitate working with the source code of the Linux kernel, the University of Oslo developed the LXR source-code browser[1] (http://lxr.linux.no). This browser is Web-based and represents the source code of the Linux kernel in HTML (HyperText Markup Language). The benefit of HTML, compared to normal source code, is the possibility of integrating hyperlinks that let you reference further information at specific positions, so that navigation between related source-code sections becomes very easy.

[1] LXR is short for Linux Cross (X) Reference.
