Section 8.5. Summary

8.5. Summary

This chapter introduces the main elements of the UDDI standard. UDDI defines a standard for service registries. Service registries are used at development time to support the development of service-based applications and support the dynamic discovery and binding of services by service clients. These are two of the fundamental characteristics of service oriented architectures. By defining an XML based realization of a service registry, UDDI plays a fundamental role in making the Web services framework a true instantiation of the service oriented architecture.

UDDI defines a data model for registering services, a query API and a set of protocols to be followed by implementers of UDDI registries. In addition, specific extensions of the basic standard define how WSDL and WS-Policy service descriptions are registered and used within the UDDI framework. The UDDI v3 set of specifications produced by the OASIS UDDI Technical Committee offers a complete solution for the problem of registering and discovering services in a Web services environment.
