3.1. Understanding Templates

SharePoint includes a set of predefined site and list templates. Each site template includes a set of predefined lists and features a home page that displays or links to the content of those lists. Table 3-1 describes the use and content of each of the predefined site templates.

The lists in the predefined site templates are, in turn , based on list templates.

Most SharePoint lists include a common set of fields that help with approval and versioning, but which aren't listed in Table 3-2 because they are common to all the built-in lists. Those common fields are: Approval Status, Approver Comments, Created, Create By, ID, Modified, and Modified By.

You can combine Tables 3-1 and 3-2 to create a graphical overview of the fields in a SharePoint site, as shown in Figure 3-1.

Figure 3-1 shows the default content of a new site based on the Team Site template. Once the site is created, users can add new lists or modify existing lists to add or delete fields; templates are simply a starting point for organizing the content of the site.

The predefined site and list templates are stored as site definitions and list definitions . Those definitions are made up of files and folders on the serverthey are not stored in the configuration or content databases. When you create a custom template, you base the template on one of these definitions. SharePoint stores custom templates in the configuration database.

The difference between predefined templates and custom templates will become clearer as you read this chapter. For now, you need to know that both types of templates appear when you create a new site or list, but only custom templates appear in the template galleries.
