Chapter 13: Disk Partitions and Format

In this chapter, you will

  • Gain an understanding of hard disk layouts

  • Learn about formatting disks

  • Learn to create new file systems

Before disks can be used to host file systems, they must be formatted using the Solaris format program. When assigning file systems to slices, the administrators can generally choose their own slices. However, there are a number of standard conventions that should be obeyed. In this chapter, formatting and file system creation are covered in depth.
