Limitations of InfoPath XML Web Service Support

 <  Day Day Up  >

XML Web services can be thought of as consisting of two broad types ”remote procedure call (RPC) and document. Document means that the content of a SOAP message is simply an XML document. RPC indicates that the content of a SOAP message is an XML representation of a remote procedure call. InfoPath 2003 does not support RPC XML Web services. In fact, InfoPath 2003 supports only the document/literal subset of XML Web services.

In addition, InfoPath 2003 does not support ADO.NET DataSet (System.Data.DataSet) because InfoPath 2003 does not allow inline schemas. The aspect of the DataSet that causes the error is the diffgram, which can be used in other circumstances to update the data source.

CONNECTING TO RPC XML WEB SERVICES

Microsoft provides instructions about how to connect to an RPC XML Web service using InfoPath by using the SOAP Toolkit, or by creating a .NET proxy document/literal XML Web service. The information is located at http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/ipsdk/html/ipsdkRPCEncodingAndWebServices.asp.
