1. In XML documents, a marker that denotes new meaning or style for the following text, or one that signifies the end to a previous tag (for example, <tag>text</tag> ); can have attributes. 2. In a GTK+ text buffer, a group of text attributes that can be applied to any pieces of the current text.
toolkit
(GUI) A function or class library that contains the building blocks for creating graphical interfaces. Most operating systems other than Unix come with only one dedicated toolkit, making the term somewhat specific to the X Window System. Example toolkits include GTK+, Motif, Qt, and Microsoft Foundation Classes.
