widget
A general term for GUI user elements, including windows , buttons , entry boxes, and labels. Widgets are the smallest pieces of a GUI toolkit and normally fall into a widget tree, where widgets are packed into container widgets.
widget tree
A treelike hierarchy of widgets, where widgets are the children of containers, and containers can hold other containers. Glade has a special window where you can view the widget tree of the current project.
window
1. In general, a clearly marked (usually rectangular) semiautonomous area on a display that you can manipulate in a number of ways (for example, by moving the window). Window managers add standard decorations to windows. 2. In the X Window System, any area that receives events from the X server. One window can contain dozens of other windows: one for each widget.
window manager
In the X Window System, a program that oversees the position, layering, and decoration of windows. The window manager also provides the user with window controls to manipulate windows. Normally, the controls on all windows have a uniform look. Windows can request special treatment with window manager hints.
