Chapter 15. Managing and Troubleshooting Hardware Devices

Objectives

This chapter covers the following Microsoft-specified objectives for the "Managing and Maintaining Physical and Logical Devices" section of the Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment exam:

Install and configure server hardware devices

  • Configure driver-signing options.

  • Configure resource settings for a device.

  • Configure device properties and settings.

  • Windows Server 2003 operates much as Windows Server 2000 and Windows XP do in working with hardware devices. We explain how you control the way the system deals with unsigned device drivers and how to configure driver settings for hardware devices.

Monitor server hardware

  • In managing your server, you will need to monitor its hardware. We explain how to monitor your system using the Device Manager, Hardware Troubleshooting Wizard, and Control Panel items, including the Add Hardware, Mouse, and Printers and Faxes applets.

Troubleshoot server hardware devices

  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to hardware settings.

  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to server hardware and hardware driver upgrades.

  • If there's one thing sure in computing, it's that there will be problems with the computer hardware. We provide some methods for determining what devices are at fault and describe how to resolve issues that occur because of hardware settings and hardware device drivers.

Study Strategies

  • To understand hardware devices so that you can manage and troubleshoot them, you need to understand what properties and settings can be managed, as well as when manual configuration is necessary. You should have access to a Windows Server 2003 computer, but you won't be missing much if you investigate on a Windows XP computer instead.

  • Make sure you are familiar with Plug and Play and how it ties in with the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) standard.

  • Run File Signature Verification and work with the Control Panel applets to become familiar with their settings.
