Objectives This chapter covers the following Microsoft-specified objectives for the "Monitor File and Print Servers" section of the Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment exam: Monitor file and print servers. Tools might include Task Manager, Event Viewer, and System Monitor. Monitor disk quotas. The purpose of this objective is to teach you how to implement and monitor disk quotas, using the various tools available in Windows Server 2003, with an emphasis on the new tools available in the R2 release. Study Strategies Although there currently are not any listings on the exam guidelines that mention file compression or file encryption, they will make an appearance on the exam nonetheless. You will need to know how to implement file and folder compression, what the advantages and limitations are, and when it cannot be used. Make sure that you set up and configure the compression scenarios in this chapter and observe the operation closely. With the current emphasis on security, it is essential to become familiar with the Windows Server 2003 version of file and folder encryption, especially the features added with the R2 release. One of the centerpieces in the R2 release of Windows Server 2003 is the File Server Resource Manager. Make sure you are familiar with its operation, what differences it provides in quotas versus using straight New Technology File System (NTFS) quotas, and how to run the reports. In addition, get some hands-on experience setting up templates and using file screening. The disk quota questions will probably be related to how quotas are applied to users and what happens when a file is moved or copied. Make sure you understand the limitations of the Microsoft version of disk quotas and how to monitor and configure them. Test your encryption skills using the provided exercises, make sure that you are comfortable with creating keys, recovering keys, and know what happens when an encrypted file is moved to another volume, or the owner's user account is deleted. To get the full benefit of the exercises in this chapter, create folders on your test servers, add files to them, and assign the files to different owners. This will allow you to experience the compression, file quotas, encryption, and reports sections in a more realistic manner. |
