11.8 Conclusion

 < Day Day Up >

In this chapter, we looked at the analysis, planning, and the actual migration from a stand-alone configuration to a clustered database solution. In these sections, we discussed how and why the upgrade should be done. The reasons should be supported by a cost-benefit analysis where the actual benefits of the migration should be thoroughly analyzed through prototyping and simulation models. After the basic analysis, the actual capacity of the hardware and software model should be determined through capacity modeling, where the configuration of the hardware is determined.

After the capacity planning, we discussed the steps involved in migrating a stand-alone configuration to RAC; most of the details in this discussion can be found in Chapter 8 where the installation and configuration details of RAC have been extensively covered; in this chapter we also discussed other aspects of the migration process such as partitioning, selection of the optimizer, etc.

The next chapter contains discussions on a very important area that is critical to any business organization, namely backup and recovery. In this chapter we will look into the details of installation and configuration using the various backup and recovery utilities like cold backups, hot backups, and RMAN.
