OpenOffice Writer is installed with many built-in styles. To apply styles, use the Stylistthe list box shown in Figure 11-1that provides the available styles, listed by type. The icons across the top of the Stylist select the type of style listedparagraph, character, frame, page, and numbering. To apply a style from the Stylist, select the object to be for matted (e.g., click on a paragraph or page or highlight some characters), click the appropriate icon on the top of the Stylist, and double-click the desired style in the list. You can also apply styles using the drop-down list on the object toolbar, as you can in Word. The drop-down list contains the styles that currently are in use in the document.

To create or modify a style, click Format on the menu bar and select Style Catalog. The window in Figure 11-2 opens.

Figure 11-2. Styles window.

Because Default is currently selected, the settings for the default style are shown in the screen that opens when you press New or Modify. Different windows open, depending on the type of style you are modifying or creating. Modify makes changes to the selected style. New creates a new style with the settings of the current style. After you make the modifications you need, you give the new style a new name. After using modify, you have the same style with different settings. After using new, you have the same style with the old settings plus the new style with the new settings.

Clicking Organizer allows you to copy styles from one template to another. Templates are discussed later in this chapter.
