Exchange 2000 administrators are Windows 2000 administrators. Consequently, they need to be familiar with the common management tools for Windows 2000 and the utilities specific to Exchange 2000 Server. A typical tool set includes Active Directory Users and Computers, Computer Management, Event Viewer, Performance, Services, Task Manager, and the Backup utility. For advanced administration tasks, Registry editors and the ADSI Edit utility are available.

The Setup program of Exchange 2000 extends the administrative environment through numerous stand-alone and extension snap-ins. Extended Windows 2000 utilities, such as Active Directory Users and Computers and the Computer Management tool, will allow you to manage a subset of Exchange 2000 resources. Exchange System Manager, on the other hand, loads most of the Exchange-related snap-ins and enables you to manage all aspects of your messaging organization. This utility supports system policies, which can streamline your work as an Exchange 2000 administrator.
