Chapter Summary

The Setup program of Exchange 2000 Server copies the Exchange 2000 Server files on your server's hard disk, updates registry entries, extends the Active Directory schema if necessary, and must react to possible error conditions. The overall Setup process is different between a first server and subsequent installations. During the first server installation, you typically need to specify the name of your (new) messaging organization. Subsequent installations expect to find an organization object in Active Directory and prompt you for different information. Subsequent installations need to know the administrative and routing groups where you want to add the new server.

The Components To Install wizard screen lists the Exchange 2000 components that you can install on your server. Under Action for Microsoft Exchange 2000, Setup suggests a Typical installation, but you can select Custom if you wish to determine the details of the installation manually, or a Minimum installation to set up Exchange 2000 Server with the minimum number of files. It is possible to customize the Setup process by using a predefined initialization file, which is easy to create when launching Setup in /CreateUnattend mode.

When you start the Setup program of Exchange 2000 Server on a computer that already has Exchange 2000 Server installed, it will switch into the maintenance mode. Using this mode, you have the ability to add and remove components or to reinstall Exchange 2000 Server entirely.
