Chapter 5
The Setup program of Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server is a highly structured utility that makes the installation task remarkably easy. This program provides a structured user interface in the form of an installation wizard that guides you through the various installation steps. Depending on the options you select, Setup checks whether the prerequisites are met and prevents you from continuing if they are not. Setup records its activities, such as the copying of files, in a specific log file named Exchange Server Setup PROGRESS.LOG, which you can find in the root directory (C:\) after an installation. You can use this file as a diagnostic tool should a setup procedure end unsuccessfully.
For many administrators, an applications setup program makes an important first impression. How you use the setup program, however, depends on whether you want to perform a new installation, add components, or repair an existing system. Most setup programs also support unattended installations using a setup initialization file. Such initialization files inherently are perfect installation documentation.
This chapter deals with the Setup program of Exchange 2000 Server and various postinstallation considerations. Lesson 1 covers in detail the installation types and options that you can select during an installation. In Lesson 2, you can read more about issues you should consider after a setup procedure is completed successfully, such as the delegation of permissions to other Exchange 2000 Server administrators.
