Chapter 28
Lotus Domino and Lotus Notes together form the high-end messaging and workgroup-computing platform of Lotus Development Corporation. This platform offers features similar to those of earlier versions of Microsoft Exchange Server. Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server opens new horizons, provides new avenues, and impresses with new technologies, but the systems remain basically close competitors. The current major versions of Lotus Domino and Notes are Release 5 or simply R5. This chapter refers to them as Lotus Domino/Notes R5.
As the amount of information in this book reveals, there are many good reasons to deploy Exchange 2000 Server in a Domino/Notes R5 environment. Motivation may stem from technical or strategic considerations; however, this chapter does not compare these platforms. It simply explains how to connect both systems to provide Exchange and Notes users with a chance to work together in an integrated environment. The ease of Exchange 2000 Server administration is highlighted.
This chapter focuses on the architecture and administration of the Connector for Lotus Notes. It explains how to provide messaging connectivity and directory synchronization. The exchange of calendar and free/busy information, however, is not covered because Exchange 2000 Server does not provide a Calendar Connector. Calendar queries must be routed through an Exchange Server 5.5 system, which is supported in mixed-mode organizations.
