Chapter Summary

The Web Storage System relies on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and IIS 5.0. It supports Web browsers and WebDAV applications by means of HTTP, WebDAV, and XML. Other applications, such as Internet mail or MAPI-based clients, can also be used to access information. ADO 2.5 and OLE DB applications work with Exchange 2000 Server resources based on ExOLEDB. Every item in the Web Storage System is accessible through a URL.

When accessing items by means of Windows Explorer and Web Folders, you can work with Exchange 2000 Server similar to a file server. Web browsers receive a different view of the data. The Web Storage System determines the client based on HTTP request header information, checks the requested item and its state, and locates an appropriate form to render the information. Custom Web Storage System forms can be registered per folder in form registration items.

The Web Storage System also supports events based on ExOLEDB. This enables you to implement workflow and process-tracking logic. You can intercept synchronous, asynchronous, and system events. Web Storage System event sinks must be registered in the IIS metabase.
