Chapter 19 -- Implementing Advanced Security

Chapter 19

About This Chapter

Modern organizations are increasingly reliant on distributed networking applications for communication and information sharing, to the point that messaging and collaboration solutions have become business critical. You should thus evaluate preventive measures against denial-of-service attacks, eavesdropping, impersonating of users, data tampering, and redirection of information to unauthorized destinations. Network and messaging security, which are important aspects of computer security, address these concerns.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Server includes powerful security technologies that make it possible for you to protect your network efficiently against intruders who intend to snoop around or damage your data. Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server relies on Windows 2000 security features. Using these, you can reliably protect your Exchange 2000 organization and provide cryptography-based security for your communication infrastructure.

This chapter covers in detail how Exchange 2000 Server integrates into the Windows 2000 security architecture and then focuses on advanced security services based on the X.509 industry standard recommended by the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
