Chapter 15 -- Scripting Dynamic Styles

Chapter 15

With dynamic styles in Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4 and later, an element's formatting can be changed at any time with script—a capability that has far-reaching implications. For example, using dynamic styles in your Web page gives you the ability to:

  • Change the size, weight, and even the font style of your text in response to a user's input
  • Expand and collapse outlines
  • Move items on the screen

Unfortunately, current versions of Netscape Navigator do not support dynamic styles in the same way as Internet Explorer, and once elements have been rendered on the screen they can be difficult or impossible to change. The examples in this chapter have been designed to degrade gracefully in browsers that do not support dynamic styles, such that even if a particular DHTML capability is not supported, error messages will not be displayed.
