Chapter 1 -- An Overview of Dynamic HTML

Chapter 1

If you have followed the growth of the World Wide Web (WWW or Web) over the past few years, you might have heard the term "Internet time." The incredible growth of the Internet and the Web has spawned dozens of new enterprises that have produced thousands of new applications (or "apps," as they're known in the industry). In the race to beat competitors to market with the next killer Web app, companies are developing new software at an unprecedented rate—at this point, an "Internet year" is probably even shorter than a dog year.

This explosive growth has been especially noticeable in the browser arena. The first browsers were limited to basic text and image display. As time and technology moved forward, these capabilities became more sophisticated. The past few browser versions have marked major progressions in their capabilities with such powerful additions as an Object Model, increased script language support, greater control over Web page appearance, and the ability to manipulate the client-side display on the fly.

This book includes coverage of both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. However, some of the chapters toward the end of the book cover technologies that are available only in Internet Explorer. But even these chapters examine how Netscape Navigator handles these technologies and provide work-arounds where possible. Differences between browsers will be mentioned where appropriate throughout the text, and Chapter 24 will cover techniques for making your pages work with a variety of browsers.

NOTE
Most standards for browsers and other Web-related technologies are developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), an independent standards body founded in 1994. The purpose of the W3C is to "realize the full potential of the Web" by developing common standards for the evolution of the World Wide Web. To find out more about the W3C and its work, visit the W3C Web site at www.w3.org.
