Sometimes, you want to select just a portion of a line segment, curve, or shape. You can use the arrow tool to draw a rectangle that selects just a slice of an element. The lasso tool is particularly good for this task, because it can select portions of various shapes .

To select part of a line or outline:

  1. Select the arrow or lasso tool.

  2. To make a selection, do one of the following:

    • With the arrow tool, click and drag out a rectangle that encloses just a piece of the line or outline; then release the mouse button (Figure 3.12).

  • You can define a single selection area that encompasses multiple elements or parts of multiple elements. The lasso and polygon lasso tools offer the most flexibility for grabbing different elements.
