Demoware

Demoware

Demoware is another variant of shareware. Demoware is the term used when a developer deploys a trial version of their application with all of the features, but only for a limited time, number of sessions, or number of records. Both large and small software development shops use this method. It is a great marketing tool. It allows potential buyers to try the software to see if it meets their requirements before spending hundreds, thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

If you are developing a vertical market application, you might want to think about creating a demoware version of your product. From our personal experience we are much more apt to purchase an application we know integrates into our existing systems and meets our requirements.

Pros: This deployment method gives clients and/or potential clients the chance to evaluate your application to see if it meets their needs. Our recommendation is to deploy with all features activated, but with limited sessions, time, or records.

Cons: The additional development time and effort to create a demo version. There could also be a very small risk someone could crack the demo and gain access to the full functionality of the software.
