Finally, another GUI method for remote administration of IIS machines is the Remote Administration (HTML) tool. Because this tool is installed by default on Web Edition, I’ll defer a full discussion of it until the next chapter. What I will mention here, however, is that you can also install this tool on Standard or Enterprise Edition and then remotely manage your IIS 6 machines over the Internet from any Windows computer running Internet Explorer 5 or higher, such as a machine running Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional.
To install Remote Administration (HTML) on Standard or Enterprise Edition, select Control Panel | open Add or Remove Programs | select Add/Remove Windows Components | select Application Server | click Details | select Internet Information Services | click Details | select World Wide Web Publishing Service | click Details | and select Remote Administration (HTML). This starts the Windows Components Wizard, and when it has finished, you can connect to your IIS machine from a remote workstation using a browser and administer it. More on that in the next chapter.
Note | The version of Remote Administration (HTML) included with Windows Server 2003 can only be used for administering IIS 6 machines, not servers running earlier versions of IIS. |
