Adding Text in Dreamweaver

 < Day Day Up >

Dreamweaver can open files created in word processing or page layout applications that have been saved as ASCII text files. Text files (.txt files), as opposed to HTML files (.htm or .html files), open in Code view in Dreamweaver. After you open a text file in Dreamweaver, you can either copy and paste the text you need into another Dreamweaver file or save that file as a new HTML file. (A text file with the .txt extension will need the.htm or .html extension if you want the text file converted to an HTML file that opens in Dreamweaver.)

If you have Microsoft Word installed, you can open a Word document from Dreamweaver by double-clicking the filename in the Files panel. You can then copy the text from the Word document and paste it in your Dreamweaver document.

In the next task, you will open a Microsoft Word document and then copy and paste the text into your hot_choc.htm file. If you don't have Word installed on your machine, skip to the next series of steps.

1.

Double-click the hot_choc.doc file from the Media folder in the Lesson11 folder in the Files panel.

Microsoft Word is launched and the document opened.

2.

Select all of the text and then choose Edit > Copy.

You can close the Word document and quit Word.

3.

In your hot_choc.htm file, click in the editable region and then choose Edit > Paste.

The hot chocolate recipe is inserted within the content region. The recipe title (Mexican Hot Chocolate) is the first paragraph in the text.

4.

Select the Mexican Hot Chocolate heading in the recipe. In the Property inspector, choose Heading 3 from the Format pop-up menu.

5.

Save your page and preview it in the browser.

If you don't have Microsoft Word, you can use the ASCII text files instead of the Word document.

6.

Double-click the hot_choc.txt file from the Media folder in the Lesson11 folder in the Files panel.

The document opens in Code view in Dreamweaver.

7.

Click the View Options button in the document window and then choose Word Wrap.

Word Wrap allows you to see all of the text in the instruction paragraph.

8.

Select all of the text and then choose Edit > Copy.

You can close the text file.

9.

In your hot_choc.htm file, click in the editable region and then choose Edit > Paste.

The hot chocolate recipe is inserted within the content region. The recipe title (Mexican Hot chocolate) is the first paragraph in the text.

10.

Select the Mexican Hot Chocolate heading. In the Property inspector, choose Heading 3 from the Format pop-up menu.

HTML offers six heading tags that you can use to format your text. The heading format changes the text to bold and changes the size based on the heading number you choose. Heading 1 is the largest; Heading 6 is the smallest.

11.

Save your page and preview it in the browser.
