Lesson 8. Optimizing and Exporting

 < Day Day Up >

After you complete your artwork, you need to export it. Whether you want to use your images on the Web or for multimedia presentations, Fireworks provides several methods for creating the best-quality images with the smallest-possible file sizes. Fireworks exports the following formats: GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, PSD, Illustrator 7, and WBMP. WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) is the graphic format optimized for mobile computing devices.

Exporting your images is actually a two-step process. First, you set the optimizing parameters you want for your image on the Optimize panel; then you export the image, saving it according to your optimization settings.

Fireworks's native file format is PNG. Although it is possible to use an optimized PNG file in a Web page, this is not always the best option. You should always keep a copy of your original Fireworks PNG files along with the exported files you create. The Fireworks PNG format retains your editable text, effects, and vector objects, so you can easily make changes. If you need to change an image, change the Fireworks PNG file and then re-export it to get the graphic you place on your Web page.

Creating small, high-quality images is one strength of Fireworks. In this lesson you will learn the proper way to optimize and then export your graphics for good-looking images on your Web pages.
