Chapter 20: Printing and Printing Issues

There are many printing issues with Word. Many have been around for years without being dealt with by Microsoft. It's difficult to blame them, however, because it must be very difficult to accommodate all the different printers available and all of the different page layouts.

Printing Page Ranges

Suppose you have a 100-page document and each chapter starts renumbering with page 1. You want to print the 88th page of the 6th chapter. Instead of printing page 101, as shown in the Status Bar in Figure 20-1, you'll want to print Section 6, Page 88. To do this, you simply type p88s6 into the Pages box.

I've occasionally come across files where someone numbers the first page of a section to be 0 (zero) so that they'll have the second page read as page 1. You'll find out now why this is not a good practice.

You can print specific pages using several different formats. Here are a few examples:

Codes	Print Results
s1-p1s2	Section 1 in its entirety and Page 1 only of Section 2.
s1,s2,s4	Sections 1, 2 and 4
s1-s4	Sections 1 through 4
s1,s4	Section 1 and Section 4
p1s1-p4s1,p5s2	Pages 1 through 4 of Section 1, and Page 5 of Section 2. Note that if the first page of Section 2 is not numbered '1,' your results could vary.

Printing only certain ranges of multi-section documents can be quickly understood by following these steps:

1. Create a document with multiple sections and multiple pages in each section.

2. Set up page numbering any way you like.

3. On each page, type the exact page number and section number that are shown in the status bar.

4. Using the table above, try printing several different ranges.
