Chapter 4: Features I Love

 < Day Day Up >

I would have called this “Features I Like and Sometimes Love,” but it would have sounded stupid. Some of these features, like a good medicine, come with bad side effects. But like most doctors, I prescribe these features because of their side effects. The Document Map is a good case in point.

Document Map

While I don’t care for the Document Map in theory—it takes up too much room on most monitors—I have used it extensively while creating this document.

Because I am often inserting cross-references to locations I don’t remember, I just flip on the Document Map and find it. When I add something new to a section, I may want to go back to some other section and insert a cross-reference to the newly written area.

If you’re creating a reference document or even a Help file, you can force the showing of the Document Map by using some VBA code. This would allow users of your document to click on any topic in the Document Map window.

The Document Map is great for these purposes.
