While Word has its issues, so do the people who use it. People love to blame the software for problems that turn out to originate somewhere between the chair and the keyboard. Now that chair and keyboard might not have been yours, but the issue may have landed in your lap.
Here are just a few of them.
There are known issues as to why spell checking won’t work. However, probably more than fifty percent of the time, it’s because of something a user did. The best thing you can do is hit Select All (Ctrl+A) in your document, then go to Tools → Language → Set Language. Be sure the Do not check spelling or grammar check box is NOT checked.
After you have done that, you must then go to Tools → Options, Spelling and Grammar tab, and hit the Recheck Document button. This makes Word behave as if the document had never been checked.
The document may be protected and you’re not supposed to change the text. If you receive a document from someone and you can only enter text in certain areas, please don’t attempt to change the rest of the text in the document. People painstakingly create forms for your use. If you unprotect the document, you may make your completed form useless to the person who sent it to you.
