Quick Start

Several requirements must be met before Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services can be used for the first time. To avoid a frustrating experience, please read the brief instructions found in the sections cited in the following list before connecting an independent terminal server on the network.

  • For basic installation of the operating system on a network, see Chapter 2.

  • For information on adding the terminal server functionality through the server configuration wizard in the Manage Your Server system tool, see Chapter 2.

  • For information on setting up local users with a valid password as members of the Remote Desktop Users user group , see Chapter 4. Alternatively, you can use the predefined administrator account for the first logon.

  • For information on supplying a suitable RDP client, see Chapter 3.

If a terminal server is located within a domain in the Active Directory, Chapter 4 supplies the necessary configuration information. When all requirements are fully met, you can proceed with testing Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services.

Windows Server 2003 comes with excellent information on Terminal Services, located in the Help and Support Center under Software Deployment\Terminal Services. It is highly recommended that you read these Help pages thoroughly before you work with a terminal server.
