Conclusion: Getting More Out of Personalization

 <  Day Day Up  >

We have seen that several techniques can bring you closer to your users through personalization. Most of these are appropriate for both public portals and enterprise portals. How you employ them is up to you and your portal goals.

To get the most out of personalization, you need to establish metrics and create a feedback loop to continuously improve your portal. If you are an online business, you may use metrics such as total sales, number of customers, number of repeat customers, average dollar value per sale, and number of site visits per purchase. For a nonprofit , you may want to consider the number of unique visitors to your site, the number of registered users, and the number of times that your free publications are downloaded or viewed .

Be sure to monitor your web site statistics and take remedial action when necessary. You cannot take customers or readers for granted, so spare no effort to keep your virtual community interested. If you choose Commerce Server, the business analytics system will provide a wealth of site usage data from both built-in and custom reports. SharePoint Portal Server, on the other hand, provides little in the way of usage analysis tools, although you can write reports against the SQL Server database tables.

Adding personalization features to your portal is a way to stir up new interest in users who have become accustomed to your site's content and features. Slowly adding more features can build up anticipation of what is coming next .
