9.3 Registering Your Mac with the Sync Server

 <  Day Day Up  >

There's a first time for everything, and this is true with iSync. There are a few things that you need to do the first time that you use iSync, the first of which is to register your computer with the .Mac synchronization server. To register your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet. To do this, open the Network System Preferences panel and look for an IP address in the TCP/IP tab. If you see an IP Address listed there, you're ready to go; if not, you should connect with your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

You cannot register your Mac with the .Mac synchronization server without a connection to the Internet (direct-connect, wireless, or dial-up).

  2. Launch iSync by double-clicking on its icon in the Finder ( /Applications ), or by clicking on its Dock icon. When iSync launches, its window will be collapsed , as shown in Figure 9-8, with just a .Mac button on the left and iSync's button on the right, prompting you to "Sync Now".

  3. To start the registration process, click on the .Mac icon on the left edge of the window. When you click on the .Mac icon, the status bar at the bottom edge of the window will slide downward (similar to how a sheet slides out of a window's toolbar) to reveal iSync's options.

To start the process of registering your Mac with the .Mac synchronization server, click on the Register button at the lower-right corner of iSync's window as shown in Figure 9-9.

  4. The next thing you need to do is to give your Mac a name. This can be the same name you've set up in the Sharing preferences panel (System Preferences Sharing), or something completely different.

To give your Mac a name, simply type in a name in the text field as shown in Figure 9-10. The Mac's name is used by the .Mac synchronization server to recognize your Mac whenever you perform a sync to your .Mac account. After entering a name for your computer, click on the Continue button.

  5. After you click on the Continue button (noted in the previous step), there will be a short delay while iSync registers the name of your Mac with the .Mac synchronization server. To register your computer, iSync sends the name you have given to your Mac along with your .Mac Member Name and password, as specified in the .Mac preference pane (System Preferences Internet .Mac).

You can associate more than one Mac to your .Mac Member Name with the .Mac synchronization server by simply assigning a different name for each computer. For example, if you have two Macs, one at work and one at home, you could register them with the .Mac synchronization server as MacWork and MacHome, respectively, as long as your .Mac Member Name is the same on both Macs.

  6. Once your Mac has been registered, iSync will notify you of this fact in the "This computer" section of its display (shown in Figure 9-11). If you've registered any other computers to your .Mac account, the names of those computers will be listed in the "Other computers" section.

Once your Mac has been registered with the .Mac synchronization server, you're ready to perform your first sync.
