15.2 Setting the Goals for Your Lessons Learned

You want to produce a document that:

  • Reviews the project's relative success in implementing scope

  • Notes significant positive and negative contributing factors

  • Makes recommendations that ensure greater success for any sequel

This last piece should include constructive observations regarding BAU processes that impacted the project significantly, whether the influence was salutary or not. Operations and Procurement come quickly to mind as line functions that can be anticipated as sources of great help or hindrance for most projects.

Before holding the lessons learned session with the team, give some thought to these questions yourself. That way, you can steer the conversation, or at least keep it on track. Not that your views are necessarily in line with team thoughts, but at least you can give them examples specific to your project, based on your own analysis, as a means of stimulating meaningful conversations. We will look at some do's and don'ts later, after examining the meat and potatoes of the desirable dialog.
