9.5 Budget Laundry List

As you prepare or review your budget, it is a good idea to see if you have accounted for everything. Although Exhibit 4 may have gaps, it is an adequate starting point for your next budgetary analysis exercise. Remember, you should be using this to check the work of others, not to do the work yourself. The benefit of arming yourself with this list is to allow you to ask semi-intelligent questions with the intent of ensuring quality and reminding others of things they forgot.

Exhibit 4: Budgetary Laundry List

Include mice, displays, network interface cards (NIC), memory, base OS, antivirus, wireless, USB ports.

Servers

Include RAM, disks or arrays, backup equipment and media, backup media multiple NICs, antivirus, monitoring, base OS, multiple CPUs, application toolsets (Web server, database, etc.), multiple power supplies, remote control hardware.

Software

Licenses, latest patches or upgrades, maintenance, companion tools.

Network infrastructure

Cabling, routers, switches with required components (dual power supplies, management cards, ports), monitoring tools.

Data center elements

Racks or cabinets for servers and routers; power; heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC); security, fire protection; humidification; surveillance equipment.

WAN

Circuits, routers, multiplexers, DSU/CSUs, cabling from demarcs to racks, redundancy, monitoring tools.

Moving costs

For relocating servers or users. Includes labor, consulting and swing servers for relocating production applications.

Consultant fees

For staff augmentation, writing code, configuring hardware or software, project management, documentation, or testing.

Turnover costs

Fees, documentation, training, and tools.

Security

Physical or IT services or devices.

Miscellaneous project costs

Includes meals for off hours, extra PCs or laptops for remote work or consultants, test circuits, documentation, and hosting fees for off-site servers.
