Create a slideshow

Create a slideshow that you can play anytime you want. You can also set a slideshow to repeat and use it as a screen saver.

The quick method

1.

Select an album, the Library, or a selection of photos from either. Or create an album just for the slideshow and drag photos into it from the Library or from other albums.

2.

Click the triangular Play button in the bottom-left corner of the iPhoto window (circled below). A "Slideshow" window opens where you choose settings for the slideshow and for the music; click the "Play" button in that window to present the slideshow.

To skip the "Slideshow" settings window and play the slides immediately, Option-click the triangular Play button, circled below.

The more controlled method

The "Slideshow" button as it appears in the Organize toolbar.

1.

Follow Step 1, above. Then Click the "Slideshow" button in the Organize toolbar to open the Slideshow view, shown below. This view includes a scrolling Thumbnail pane that contains all of the photos in the slideshow. iPhoto automatically creates a Slideshow album, places it in the "Source" pane, and highlights it, as shown below.

The transition you choose from this pop-up menu applies only to the selected photo.

2.

From the "Effect" pop-up menu choose "Black and White" or "Sepia" to add that effect to the current photo.

3.

From the "Transition" pop-up menu, choose a transition, or choose "None." You can set different transitions for individual photos.

4.

By default, the Ken Burns Effect (a slow pan-and-zoom that adds movement to still photos) is turned on in the Settings window (shown on the following page). Click the "Settings" button to see this and other options. To apply a Ken Burns effect or to modify the existing automatic effect, check the "Ken Burns Effect" box, then:

  • Move the toggle switch to the "Start" position. Size and position the photo as you want it to appear at the beginning of the pan or zoom. Use the Size slider to zoom in close on one part of the photo, then press-and-drag the photo to another position in the Preview pane until the photo is positioned and sized as you want.

  • Then move the toggle switch to the "End" position. Size and position the photo as you want it to appear at the end of the pan-and-zoom effect.

  • Click the "Preview" button to test the effect.

When you create a new slideshow, all transitions are set to the default style in the Settings sheet (on the next page).

Individual transitions can be changed using the menu above or in the Adjust window (shown on the right).

5.

To make more adjustments to individual photos, click the "Adjust" button. In the "Adjust This Slide" window you can change the duration, transition style, transition speed, or transition direction (if the selected transition is directional).

To close this window, click its Close button (circled).

6.

Click the "Settings" button to change the default settings that affect the entire slideshow. A settings sheet slides down from the title bar.

7.

Click the "Music" button to show the drop-down Music sheet. The top pane shows a folder of sample music and your entire iTunes Library, including any custom albums (collections of songs) that you created. Select the Library or an album to show its songs in the bottom pane. You can select multiple songs for long slideshows so the same song won't have to repeat over and over.

8.

Click the "Play" button in the Slideshow toolbar to show it full-screen.
