Product-Centric Management

Product-Centric Management

A product-centric approach involves the use of a variety of point tools to manage different storage components . (See Figure 8-3.) In practice, this is probably the most common "architecture" for storage management today. IT professionals often use the platform-specific tools that came with their servers and storage arrays and augment them over time with a collection of single-purpose software that they have acquired , or written themselves , in response to the storage issues they confront on a day-to-day basis. This is sometimes referred to as the "quiver of arrows" approach.

The challenges posed by this approach include the requirement to evaluate and select multiple point products from different vendors and to keep each point product up to date with product release cycles and the storage and server platform changes.

Using multiple point products also makes it difficult and expensive to transfer the knowledge required for this management approach to new hires. Moreover, the need to use multiple product-specific tools will also impose a practical limit on how many GBs of storage an administrator could effectively manage in a single workday .

Despite these limitations, however, the "quiver of arrows" approach remains the most common management strategy employed today.
