In this part
H aving covered basic networking terminology and concepts in Part I, we try to cover something more tangible in Part II namely, the bits and pieces of equipment and cabling that are necessary to the proper operation of any network.
You explore the basic principles of network layout and design as you seek to translate networking concepts into a working network. After that, you tackle the ins and outs of network interface cards, or NICs, as they're more commonly known in the networking trade. With cards in place in your computers, the cables that connect them come next .
Along the way, you can figure out how to build a new network or extend an old one and how to take stock of an existing network. You also discover how to bring the parts of the network together to create a harmonious whole rather than a hodgepodge of bits and pieces. Your goal is to understand who the players are and how to make them function well as a gung-ho team.
