Domain Controller, Heal Thyself

team lib

Active Directory is dynamically self-healing, or at least self-maintaining. It regularly checks itself for internal consistency, missing data, and expired entries. By default, a housecleaning operation is performed every 12 hours. This housecleaning consists of deleting logs, removing expired entries, and defragmenting the database file. The logs deleted by the housecleaning operation are change or transaction logs that temporarily store operations. After the system verifies that all actions listed in these logs have been performed successfully, the logs are deleted because they're no longer needed.

REMEMBER

When you use a computer, the data on the hard disk naturally becomes fragmented (or split), which results in slower data access. The process of reorganizing this data back into the proper order to maximize performance is called defragmentation .

As Active Directory changes and adapts to the network environment, relationship and other object- related data becomes outdated or expires . This data, along with deleted items that still remain in the database, is removed. Defragmenting the database file compacts the data and reorganizes the file to maximize performance.

When defragmentation is performed by the system, it's called online defragmentation . Online defragmentation creates space within the existing database file for new Active Directory entries, but it does not release the space back to the file system for use by other files. Only offline defragmentation releases unused database space back to the file system. Microsoft recommends that offline defragmentation be performed only when absolutely necessary (such as when not enough drive space is available to perform normal system operations). To initiate an offline defragmentation, you must reboot and press the F8 key to access the boot menu. Then select Directory Services Restore Mode, which performs the offline defragmentation and boots the system into Safe mode. You'll have to reboot again to return to a fully operational network-supporting boot.
