Practice Questions

Question 1

You are a hardware vendor who sells Windows operating systems with your products. You are creating scripted installations for your technicians to run on the machines they are configuring. You want to ensure that the text-based setup is completely automated but that the graphical portion prompts the owners of the machines for all their specific information. The dialog box shown in Figure 2.18 appears when you are using the Setup Manager to create your scripts. What option will you select to ensure that the scripts meet your specifications?

  • A. Change to Provide Defaults.

  • B. Change to Hide Pages.

  • C. Change to Read Only.

  • D. Change to GUI Attended.

Figure 2.18.

A1:

Answer D is correct. The GUI Attended mode provides answers for the text-based part of the installation but prompts for all the GUI answers. The Provide Defaults option provides a guide for the user , but allows her to change the answers should she desire ; therefore, answer A is incorrect. The Hide Pages option completely hides option pages where the answers have been provided; therefore, answer B is incorrect. The Read Only option allows the user to see answers you have supplied and prompts her for answers you have not provided; therefore, answer C is incorrect.

Question 2

Emma is a system administrator for a company that is currently implementing a Windows 2000 infrastructure. The company has five regional offices across North America (two in Canada and three in the United States), and they are all interconnected with T1 lines. Having set up a domain controller, she is about to configure 10 servers with identical hardware including 256MB RAM, two 18GB IDE hard drives , and dual PIII 600MHz processors. These servers, which will all end up in one of the five regional offices, are intended to perform a variety of functions including Web Service, File and Print Service, and Application Service.

Required Results:

Servers are all installed with Windows 2000 Server.

Optional Desired Results:

Servers are all to be installed with a minimum amount of effort at their destination sites.

Servers should be able to be configured by summer interns with a minimum of training or experience with Windows 2000 Server.

Servers end up as members of the domain.

Proposed Solution:

Emma will use Setup Manager to create an unattended text file and a uniqueness database file. These files will include configuration settings for completely setting up the machines, including adding them to the domain. The servers will be shipped to their permanent sites, and then a student working at each site will run a batch file that will begin the automated setup routine.

Which results will the proposed solution produce?

  • A. The proposed solution produces the required result and all the optional results.

  • B. The proposed solution produces the required result but only one of the optional results.

  • C. The proposed solution produces the required result but only two of the optional results.

  • D. The proposed solution does not produce the required result.

A2:

Answer A is correct. By configuring unattended installations using Setup Manager, Emma ensures that the software is installed and that the machines end up as domain members. In addition, because the unattended installation is invoked by a batch file, the summer student starting it does not need to know much about the installation process. Furthermore, because the configuration is simply running a batch file, it can be done with a minimum of effort at the destination site; therefore, answers B, C, and D are incorrect.

Question 3

Andrea is preparing to install Windows 2000 Server on three of her computers that are currently running Windows NT Server 4.0. She has a complete list of all installed hardware in each computer, but is not sure that it meets the requirements for Windows 2000. What online resource can Andrea best use to verify the compatibility of her currently installed hardware?

  • A. She needs to visit each specific manufacturer's Web site to see whether the specific hardware has been certified for Windows 2000.

  • B. She needs to visit the Windows Update Web site to see whether her hardware has been certified for Windows 2000.

  • C. She needs to visit the Hardware Compatibility List Web site and search out her hardware to determine whether it has been certified for Windows 2000.

  • D. She needs to visit the Web site of her server reseller to determine whether her hardware has been certified for Windows 2000.

A3:

Answer C is correct. The best way to ensure that all of her hardware has been certified for Windows 2000 would be for Andrea to search for it on the Windows HCL Web site. Only by finding it on the HCL can Andrea be certain that her hardware will function at a minimum acceptable level. Although manufacturers' Web sites and reseller Web sites may have this information, it is not a guarantee and you should not expect support from Microsoft for non-certified hardware; therefore, answers A and D are incorrect. Windows Update is used to update Windows software installations, not verify the compatibility of hardware; therefore, answer C is incorrect.

Question 4

Which of the following computers could be directly upgraded to Windows 2000 Server? (Choose all that apply)

  • A. A Windows 98 client computer

  • B. A Windows NT 4.0 IIS server

  • C. A Windows NT 3.51 file and print server

  • D. A Windows NT 3.51 Citrix server

A4:

Answers B and C are correct. The supported upgrade paths for Windows 2000 Server are from Windows NT Server 4.0 and Windows NT Server 3.51 (not running Citrix). Windows 9x and Windows NT Server 3.51 running Citrix are not directly upgradeable to Windows 2000 Server; therefore, answers A and D are incorrect.

Question 5

Christopher is an instructor at a Microsoft Certified Technical Education Center (CTEC). He teaches the Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server classes, which run for three weeks each. At the end of each three-week period, he needs to wipe his 55 lab computers and restore them back to their original state. Which installation method might work best for Christopher?

  • A. Perform an attended installation on each computer.

  • B. Perform a RIS installation on each computer.

  • C. Perform an unattended installation on each computer using an answer file.

  • D. Replace them with new, prestaged computers.

A5:

Answer C is correct. Initiating unattended installations for his computers would be the best solution of the options provided. He could, for example, create a Sysprep image and use a third-party disk cloning application to restore the computers back to their original state. Alternatively, he could use a floppy disk containing a batch file, answer file, and .udf file to start the installation from the CD-ROM. Performing an attended installation on 55 computers every three weeks is not the best solution; therefore, answer A is incorrect. RIS cannot be used for Windows 2000 Server installation (it is not supported by Microsoft); therefore, answer B is incorrect. Replacing the computers with new, prestaged computers is too expensive and still not answer the problem of restoring the configuration back to the original state; therefore, answer D is incorrect.

Question 6

You have an older computer on which you would like to install Windows 2000 Server so you can use it in a lab environment. What is the absolute minimum amount of RAM that you must have to install Windows 2000 Server on this computer?

  • A. 64MB

  • B. 128MB

  • C. 256MB

  • D. 384MB

A6:

Answer B is correct. Although the recommended minimum is 256MB of installed RAM, the absolute minimum that you can install Windows 2000 Server with is 128MB; therefore, answers A, C, and D are incorrect. Do not, however, expect to get peak performance out of a computer running Windows 2000 Server on 128MB of RAM.

Question 7

You are preparing to install Windows 2000 Server on three file servers for your organization. What licensing mode would most make sense if your organization has 200 clients that can reasonably be expected to access all three servers at the same time?

  • A. Per Seat

  • B. Per Server

  • C. Per Client

  • D. Per Connection

A7:

Answer A is correct. Per Seat licensing makes sense in this situation because the total number of connections you can have, 600, is greater than the number of clients you have, 200. Per Server licensing only makes sense if you have small numbers of clients and large numbers of servers; therefore, answer B is incorrect. There is no such thing as Per Client and Per Connection for Windows 2000 Server licensing; therefore, answers C and D are incorrect.

Question 8

Hannah is preparing to create an answer file for the unattended installation of several new servers in her organization. Which of the following items can an answer file specify during the installation process? (Choose all that apply.)

  • A. The servers should be SQL Server 2000 computers.

  • B. The servers should use a specific networking configuration.

  • C. The servers should be installed into a specific domain.

  • D. The servers should use specific screen resolution and color depth settings.

A8:

Answers B, C, and D are correct. It is possible to specify the networking configuration, domain membership, and color settings (among many other options) in an answer file. You cannot specify that a newly installed server should perform a specific role until after the server has been installed and configured completely, including the installation of additional software; therefore, answer A is incorrect.

Question 9

You have several computers in your organization that you would like to upgrade to Windows 2000 Server. Which of the following file systems that are in use will support an installation of Windows 2000 Server? (Choose all that apply.)

  • A. FAT12

  • B. FAT16

  • C. FAT32

  • D. NTFS

A9:

Answers B, C, and D are correct. Windows 2000 Sever can be installed on FAT16, FAT32, and NTFS volumes . NTFS is the recommend file system as it enables security and management features of Windows 2000 not otherwise available (see Chapter 3). The FAT12 file system is the one used on floppy disks; therefore, answer A is incorrect.

Question 10

You have just completed a default installation of Windows 2000 Server. Where can you look on your computer's hard disk to see the Windows 2000 Server files?

  • A. WINDOWS Folder

  • B. WINDOWSNT Folder

  • C. WINDOWS2000 Folder

  • D. WINNT Folder

A10:

Answer D is correct. The default installation location of Windows 2000 is to the WINNT folder on the specified partition; therefore, answers A, B, and C are incorrect.
