Case Study 3

Gramm Records

Gramm Records operates a chain of retail stores in North America, with a limited number of outlets in Europe, South America, and Australia. The business is run from a home office in San Francisco, which is housed in two separate buildings one block from each other. Gramm has six distribution centers located in Chicago, Dallas, New York, London, Buenos Aires, and Sydney. It has approximately 250 retail locations in North America and 1020 stores on each of the other continents.

Current LAN/Network Structure

Gramm runs Windows NT 4.0 servers at all locations. The PDC for the master accounts domain is located in the San Francisco home office, and six resource domains with PDCs are located at each of the distribution centers. BDCs for the accounts domain are situated in San Francisco and each distribution center.

The only exceptions to the Windows NT 4 environment are the Gramm Web and DNS servers, which are all Unix based. Gramm does not intend to migrate either the Web server or the DNS servers. The DNS servers currently run BIND version 8.1.2.

Each retail store has a single NT 4.0 member server.

Workstations are a mix of Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and Windows 98 SE.

The home office recently upgraded to 100Mbps Ethernet, whereas distribution centers and retail stores use 10Mbps twisted-pair Ethernet. This network infrastructure is considered adequate for current and future needs.

Proposed LAN/Network Structure

No major changes are planned to the network infrastructure. Gramm Records is planning to migrate to Windows 2000, replacing any client or server computers that cannot run on the new platform.

Current WAN Connectivity

The two San Francisco headquarters buildings are connected by a full 1.5Mbps T1 line.

The distribution centers are connected to headquarters by means of a Frame Relay cloud. These 56Kbps circuits are frequently saturated , especially during peak periods of the day.

Retail locations connect to the nearest distribution center using an analog dial-up connection, which is initiated at the start of the business day and closed when the store is closed.

Proposed WAN Connectivity

Gramm is investigating DSL as a way to ease WAN congestion and reduce costs for communications between the home office and the distribution centers, as well as between the distribution centers and the retail stores. However, there is neither a timetable nor a budget for this upgrade.

Directory Design Commentary

Chief Technologist : We need to get bandwidth out to each of our retail stores fast. The recorded music industry is changing so quickly, and we need to keep ahead of those changes. We need to be able to deliver music to the stores on demand and get the technology in place to deliver custom recorded music to our customers.

Network Services Manager : We are getting swamped with requests for new user accounts, password changes, printer configuration changes, and the like. I have a staff of trained technology experts who are doing nothing but routine, mind-numbing tasks .

Store Manager : Whenever I hire a new employee, I need to fill out three pages of paperwork, fax it to the home office, and then hope that someone looks at it and sets up a user account before the employee finds a new job elsewhere. If someone forgets a password, it seems that it takes forever to get it fixed.

Current Internet Positioning

Gramm Records has an extensive Web site from which customers can buy recorded music, paraphernalia, and accessories. Its registered Internet domain name is Grammrecords.com . All Gramm employees also have an email account on the corporate Exchange server.

Future Internet Positioning

Gramm recently created a subsidiary company called Gramm On Demand Music and registered the domain name Grammod.com . Gramm On Demand will compile custom music CDs based on customer requests. Management believes that the new venture will become a major portion of Gramm's business over the next three years .
