Deciding on a DNS Integration Strategy

Clearly, you have several options for maintaining an existing DNS infrastructure when deploying Windows 2000. There is no right answer, just a lot of decisions and tradeoffs to make.

If an organization is using BIND 8.1.2 or higher, the choice is fairly simple ”just keep what is working today. However, if an earlier version of BIND is deployed and supports the needs of the organization, most DNS administrators would be reluctant to replace something that works, even if it is just a newer version of the same product.

Segregation of DNS architectures at the firewall can be a viable solution. Some configuration challenges do exist in organizations that use a proxy server to manage access to the Web and other Internet resources, but these are not insurmountable.

Creating an Active Directory child domain and delegating the zone to Windows 2000 DNS is also a workable option. However, starting the DNS root in Active Directory at a lower level can raise Active Directory design issues; this approach should therefore be understood by both the DNS administrators and the Active Directory design team before it is selected.

Finally, delegation of only the Active Directory locator zones is a slightly more complex solution, but it avoids the need to create a lower-level Active Directory domain root. The biggest challenge is to ensure that host and PTR records are manually entered on the corporate DNS whenever new domain controllers are added. These records should be added well before starting the dcpromo process to create the domain controller.

Whichever approach is chosen , it should be clearly understood that a migration to Microsoft Windows 2000 should not require the replacement of an existing DNS infrastructure and the integration of Microsoft and non-Microsoft DNS servers should be simple and straightforward.
