31 Tell a Friend About the iTunes Music Store

If you're a little more experienced than the novice computer or Internet user , you might be familiar with how URLs (web addresses) work; this method of passing interesting links back and forth between friends has become fairly commonplace. Even though the iTunes Music Store is not a "website" in the traditional sense (being encapsulated entirely within a standalone application, iTunes), the individual pages within the store have their own web addresses you can exchange with your friends.

When you go to an iTunes Music Store URL, your browser handles the incoming data by redirecting it into iTunes, which launches and connects to the music store and then switches to the requested page. This way, you can send a standard web URL to a friend; when she clicks the link, her copy of iTunes pops up and shows her the album or artist you wanted her to see in the first placewith convenient purchasing links built right in.

32. Create a Web Link to Your Favorite Music for Sale

1.
Browse the iTunes Music Store

Choose Music Store from the Source pane in the iTunes' window; browse the contents of the iTunes Music Store as described in 19 Browse the iTunes Music Store . For this task, you don't even need to be signed in.

Navigate to the download page for an album. As you move your mouse over lines of text such as the artist name or album title, notice that the text becomes underlined . This indicates that the text is a live link, with a URL you can copy just as in a regular web browser.

2.
Drag a Web Link to the Desktop

Click the highlighted text of an artist or album title and drag. A translucent label shows that the title and URL of the link is being copied . Drag the mouse pointer onto the Desktop and release; a web link or shortcut is created, which when opened leads back to the same download page from which you just dragged the link.

TIP

Similarly, you can drag iTunes Music Store links directly from iTunes into other applications, such as into your email program.

3.
Copy an iTunes Music Store URL

You can also use the more traditional copy-and-paste method to juggle URLs from within iTunes. Right-click (or, on the Mac, Control +click) the highlighted text of an artist or album title or on the album art for a given album. Choose Copy iTunes Music Store URL from the context menu to copy the web address of the page to your computer's Clipboard or temporary memory.

4.
Paste the URL into Another Application

In another application, such as an email composition window, select Edit, Paste to insert the URL of the download page into the text. When the email recipient clicks the URL, she'll be taken straight to the page from which you copied the URL.
