89 Use Your iPod as an Alarm Clock

After you've named your iPod, the next step in getting your iPod ready for use is setting its internal clock. It's important that the iPod have an accurate internal time for a variety of reasons. The alarm clock functions and calendaring features, clearly, require the iPod's time to be correct in order to work (see 84 Transfer and View iCal Calendar Items (Mac only) and 89 Use Your iPod as an Alarm Clock for more information). Furthermore, during normal playback of your music, the iPod keeps track of which songs it plays and when; when you synchronize your iPod back to iTunes, the time when each song was last played is transferred into the iTunes' database so that your navigation within iTunes can take accurate advantage of which songs you've played most recently. For example, if you have a Smart Playlist that keeps track of the last 100 songs you've played in order (see 35 Create a Smart Playlist for more details), having the correct time set on your iPod as well as on your computer ensures that the songs are all shown in order.

NOTE

Your iPod's date and time are set automatically each time you synchronize it with iTunes. However, you might have a need to set the time manually, for example if you don't have access to your computer for an extended period of time, or if you go on a trip across time zone lines.

1.
Navigate to the Date & Time Settings

Navigate into the iPod's Settings menu. Highlight the Date & Time option and press the Select button.

5. Set the iPod's Date and Time

2.
Choose a Time Zone

In the Date & Time Settings menu, scroll to the Set Time Zone option and press the Select button. In the Set Time Zone submenu, scroll to the appropriate time zone setting for your location. Make sure that you select correctly whether Daylight Saving Time (labeled DST ) is in effect at the current date. Time zones are identified by a region or a large city located in each zone. Press the Select button to choose a time zone and return to the Date & Time Settings menu.

3.

Choose the Set Date & Time option. In this screen, use the navigation wheel to raise or lower the value of each selected field (such as the hour , day or month, or year), and the Select button to accept each field's correct value and move to the next field. Be sure to set AM or PM correctly. After you press Select on the final field (the year), you returned to the Date & Time Settings menu.

4.
Choose 12-hour or 24-hour Time

Select the Time option and use the Select button to toggle between 12-hour and 24-hour time formats. This setting is purely a matter of taste, and how you like to view the timethe option you select does not affect the iPod's internal timekeeping.

5.
Turn On the Title Bar Clock

Select the Time in Title option and use the Select button to toggle the feature on and off. With this feature enabled, the title of each screen in the iPod's navigation system switches to display the current time a few seconds after you navigate to that screen.

Press the Menu button several times to back out of the Settings menu system when you're done.
