Saving a reference to a favorite website so that you can quickly access it again later is known as creating a bookmark for that site, or bookmarking the site . (Internet Explorer uses the term Favorites instead of bookmarks , but they're effectively the same thing.) Safari allows better bookmark organization than most other browsers, giving you a full-screen bookmark manager page (the Bookmark Library ) in which you can organize bookmarks into folders and edit them visually. You can also use bookmarks that are stored in the Bookmarks bar , shown just below the toolbar; folders of bookmarks in the Bookmarks bar (below the main toolbar) are indicated with a triangle, and expand into drop-down menus from which you can select websites with a single click.

61. Keep Track of Websites with Bookmarks

If you enable tabbed browsing , a feature that allows you to open several web pages at once within a single Safari window (each one behind its own labeled tab under the Bookmarks bar), bookmark folders have an additional perk: When you open a bookmark folder as a menu, from the Bookmarks bar or the Bookmarks menu, an additional menu option appearsOpen in Tabs. If you select this option, every bookmark in the folder opens at the same time, each in its own tab. This feature can become unwieldy with large numbers of pages opening at once, so for best results, make sure your folders are organized as small collections of 10 bookmarks or less.

TIP

With tabbed browsing enabled, a new column called Auto-Click appears in the Bookmark Library page. If you select the check box in this column for a folder, that folder's behavior changes so that if you click its title in the Bookmarks bar, the menu does not open, but rather the bookmarks inside it all open in tabs automatically in unison . An Auto-Clickenabled folder in the Bookmarks bar has a square next to its name instead of a triangle.

KEY TERM

Bookmark A reference to a favorite website that you would like to return to in the future. A bookmark consists of a title and the address of the site, and Safari lets you organize them in folders for easy access.

Tabbed browsing A browsing method in which several web pages can be open at once within a single Safari window, each one in its own labeled tab. Enable this in the Tabs pane of the Safari Preferences window.

Safari also provides another advantage over other browsers in bookmark management: It lets you specify a descriptive name for each bookmark at the time you create it. Most browsers automatically use the web page's title as the name of the bookmark, but this isn't always what you want. Although other programs allow you to edit bookmark names after you create them, that can be tedious . Safari lets you enter an appropriate name right when you create the bookmark.

Safari's bookmark management function, unlike that of many other browsers, is both a full-featured editing utility and a hierarchical catalog for accessing bookmarks directly. From the Bookmarks Library page, you can go to any bookmark's address by double-clicking the bookmark in the list.

1.
Surf to a Website

Launch Safari and enter a URL (website address) in the Address bar (the text box) at the top of the screen; then press Return to go directly to that site. You can also search for a website that suits your interest by entering search terms into the Google search box in the upper-right corner of the screen and pressing Return .

KEY TERM

Google The most popular "search engine" on the Web. Located at http://www.google.com, Google is faster and more accurate than most other search engines available. Safari allows you to perform a Google search without having to go to Google's site first.

2.
Click the Bookmark Button

Click the + button to the left of the Address bar. This action brings up a sheet that prompts you for the bookmark name and location.

3.
Enter a Bookmark Name

The default name for the bookmark is the web page's title; that name is selected, though, so if you don't like it, simply type a name that's more to your liking.

4.
Select a Folder and Click Add

Click the drop-down menu to show all your bookmark folders. Select the folder where you want to save your new bookmark.

TIP

Safari, in its default configuration, comes with a few folders with some bookmarks already defined for you: News, Mac, Kids, Sports , and so on. As you add more folders for your bookmarks, as explained later in this task, those folders will appear in a hierarchical list (all folders are shown, even folders inside other folders) when you add a new bookmark.

Click the Add button to add the new bookmark to your list. You can now access the bookmark by clicking the Bookmarks icon at the left end of the Bookmarks bar (the icon looks like an open book) to open the Bookmarks Library page, and then opening the correct folder. When you find it, double-click the newly added bookmark to go to the site it marks.

TIP

To delete a bookmark from the Bookmarks Library , select the bookmark and press Delete . You can undo a deletion by selecting Undo from the Edit menu.

5.
Open the Bookmarks Library Page

Any bookmark-organizing efforts you might want to make begin on the Bookmarks Library page. Open the Bookmarks Library page by clicking the book icon at the far left end of the Bookmarks bar.

6.
Select the Folder to Organize

Click any folder in the Collections list on the left side of the Bookmarks Library page. The contents of that folder appear in the pane on the right.

TIP

Bookmark folders can contain other folders. In the right pane of the Bookmarks Library page, you can open and browse folders the same as you can in List view in the Finder. Note the triangles that indicate whether the folder is expanded or collapsed .

7.
Add a Folder

Click the + icon at the bottom of the right pane to create a new folder inside the currently selected folder. Click the + icon at the bottom of the Collections pane to create a new top-level folder to appear in that list. The default folder name appears as untitled folder ; it is selected as soon as the folder is created, so that you can immediately type a new name for the folder.

8.
Change a Bookmark's Name or Address

Click to select a bookmark in the right pane of the Bookmarks Library page, pause briefly , and then click the name or address field again to select that field's contents for editing. Alternatively, right-click or Control +click the bookmark and choose Edit Name or Edit Address from the contextual menu. Type the new name or the new URL and press Return .

9.
Move a Bookmark

To move a bookmark, drag it from one folder to another or to another position within the same folder. To navigate down into a subfolder, hover the mouse (while still dragging the bookmark) over the folder you want to expand; after a moment, it will open automatically.

You can move (or copy, by holding down as you drag) bookmarks into the special Bookmarks Menu collection by dragging them from where they're listed in the right pane into the collection at left. Bookmarks that you add to the Bookmarks Menu collection appear as items under the Bookmarks menu; this is a quick way to access important bookmarks that aren't quite frequently enough used for you to put them in your Bookmarks bar.

TIP

The Bookmarks bar is special. You can drag bookmarks into it and off it from the Bookmarks Library page, or you can drag an address into it straight from the Address bar. The Bookmarks bar is represented as its own collection/folder in the Bookmarks Library page; you can move bookmarks into it as you would into any other folder. Click and drag to change how bookmarks are positioned in the Bookmarks bar; you can also delete a bookmark from the bar by dragging it off the bar and dropping it away from the browser window.
