Discover Nearby Websites BEFORE YOU BEGIN 36 Allow Others to Share Your Files SEE ALSO 61 Keep Track of Websites with Bookmarks 63 Access Your Bookmarks Using .Mac Mac OS X allows any Mac to be a web server, hosting files that can be accessed from anywhere in the world using only a browser. However, if you don't know the IP address or hostname for each Mac, the usefulness of this feature is limited. It's common, though, for individuals in a household or office network to use Personal Web Sharing to make certain files available just to the other members of the household or office. Bonjour makes this possible without requiring anybody to know the hostnames or IP addresses of the Macs that are sharing the files. In Safari , Apple's built-in web browser, you only have to go to the Bonjour section of your bookmarks to see all the websites hosted by Macs on the local network along with the status pages for all Bonjour-enabled printers. 1. | Open Safari Open a Finder window and navigate to the Applications folder; double-click the Safari icon. You can also click the Safari icon in the Dock to launch the application. | 2. | Open the Bookmarks Pane Click the Bookmarks icon (at the far left of the Bookmarks Bar). If the Bookmarks Bar is hidden, choose Show All Bookmarks from the Bookmarks menu (or press ). The Bookmarks pane opens, showing all your bookmarks in their various collections. | 3. | View Bonjour Locations Click the Bonjour entry in the Collections list. All the websites served by Macs (or Bonjour-enabled printers) on the local network appear in the list, named according to the full name of the owner of the account hosting each site. 39. Discover Nearby Websites TIP Personal Web Sharing uses your Sites folder as its web root; in other words, the URL http://your.host.name/~johndoe will show you the contents of John Doe's Sites folder, or (if one exists) the index.html file inside that folder. The default settings for the built-in Apache web server, which is what powers Personal Web Sharing, are such that if you don't have an index.html file in your Sites folder, you will be able to see a file listing of that folder and access every file in your browser. Make sure to put an index.html file in your Sites folder if you want to hide its contents from other users! | 4. | Go to Local Website Double-click any listed site to open it in the same Safari window. | |
