The synthesis of digital and traditional photography comes in iPhoto's ability to take your photos and transform them instantly into an online album that everybody can view, no matter where they are. With an online album in the form of a web page, your photos can reach all your friends and family in the comfort of their own desks or laptops; you don't have to show them a slideshow in iPhoto, nor do you have to physically send them photographs in an envelope. All you have to do is email them a URL.

To create a HomePage photo album, you must have a .Mac account. Use the .Mac Preferences pane to sign up for a .Mac account if you don't have one (see 45 Sign Up for .Mac ) or to enter your .Mac account information if you have already signed up.

1.
Select a Group of Photos to Publish

Select a group of photos, either in the main Photo Library or in an album; if you don't select any photos, the HomePage function uses all the photos in the current view. Be carefulif you have hundreds of photos in your Photo Library , you could end up publishing a photo album page with hundreds of pictures on it!

For best results, try to keep your album limited to 20 or 30 pictures at most.

2.
Click the HomePage Button

Click the HomePage button at the bottom of the iPhoto window. This brings up the Publish HomePage dialog box in which you can configure your online album page before uploading it to your .Mac account.

NOTE

You must be connected to the Internet to create an online album.

3.
Enter Titles and Descriptions

The album page provides several editable text fieldsthe title at the top, a block of descriptive text for the whole page, and titles for each of the pictures on the page. Click to edit each field, being careful to keep the text limited to the size that iPhoto enforces. The descriptive text field for the entire page, for example, can be no more than 150 characters in length.

4.
Select a Frame Style and Layout

In the drawer at the right of the Publish HomePage dialog box, click any of the 22 frame and background styles to choose a theme for the page. Each of the frames changes the font to a common typeface appropriate to the page style.

TIP

.Mac's HomePage function provides many more themes than what is available in iPhoto. If you want, after you have published your photo album, you can visit the .Mac website (http://www.mac.com) and log in to the iPhoto online album, which is listed among your other HomePage pages. Select one of the other themes available through .Mac to spruce up your album page even more.

Use the radio buttons to choose whether the page should have two or three columns of pictures.

5.
Include a Contact Button and Counter

Apple provides a couple of useful options you can enable if you want: a Send Me a Message button, which people can use to contact you by email, and a page Counter , which lets you keep track of how many people have viewed your page. Select one or both of these check boxes.

6.
Publish the Album

When you're done fixing the page the way you want it, click Publish . The pictures are scaled down appropriately and thumbnails are created; the images and the web page are then uploaded to the .Mac server.

7.
Note the URL of the Web Page

When the album has uploaded successfully, iPhoto reports to you the URL for the online album. Copy this URL into an email message so that you can send it to all your friends and family!
