Apple's not content with making digital photography merely the equal of film photography; they had to come up with something additional, some feature that was compelling in its own right, that was possible only with digital photography and iPhoto. That feature is the iPhoto Book.

Using iPhoto, you can take any selection of photos and compose them into a book. This book can take on any of a number of different formats or styles ("themes"), and you can lay out the photos on the pages according to various different artistic schemes. The books include text derived from the Title and Comments fields on each photo in iPhoto, and you can adjust the text until you've got a professional-looking sequence of pages just the way you want them to look. Finally, with a couple of clicks, you can send these pages to Apple, where the book will be professionally printed and bound in hardcover or paperback (depending on the style you select), printed on acid-free glossy paper with a linen binding and a cover color that you choose. This book is then delivered to you using the shipping information defined in your Apple ID account. The whole process costs no more than $30 or $40, though the price can rise depending on the shipping options you choose or if you use more than the baseline 10 pages.

1.
Select an Album to Make into a Book

To make a book, you must first select an album. Click any album in the Source pane of the iPhoto window to select the photos you want to turn into a book.

2.
Choose a Book Style

Click the Book button under the right pane to create a book and switch iPhoto into Edit Book mode.

92. Create an iPhoto Book

From the sheet that appears, choose a format and layout style for your book. Click each of the options in turn to see what each style looks like. The Story Book theme, for instance, uses rotation and overlaps to create a "fun" look, whereas Classic and Portfolio create dignified, elegant layouts maximizing the use of the paper. Travel uses photos rotated slightly and placed within informal borders to develop a travelogue-like layout. Picture Book uses full- bleed printing to extend the photos to the very edges of the pages, and has no text. Pick the style that best matches your photos and the kind of book you want to create.

TIP

The Double-sided pages check box lets you fit twice as many photos into the book for the same price; but if you go over the baseline 10 sheets of paper, double-sided pages cost more. Use the Options + Prices button to go to a website that describes all the pricing options for various book types.

3.
Lay Out the Pages

In the next sheet, choose whether to lay the book out Manually or Automatically . If you choose Manually , you are given a series of blank pages with "drop zones" into which you can drag your photos from the scrolling bar (or "shelf") at the top. If you choose Automatically , iPhoto arranges your photos onto pages for you; you can rearrange them yourself if you want by dragging and dropping.

TIP

The first photo in your selected album is used in Automatic mode for the cover of the book. If you want this photo to appear in the interior of the book as well, select the first photo and choose Duplicate from the File menu. A copy of the photo appears at the end of the album; drag the copy to wherever in the album sequence you want it to appear.

Next comes the pleasantly absorbing task of deciding which photos to place on which pages, and how many photos should be displayed on each page. Use the Page Type drop-down menu to select what kind of layout each page should have.

The "shelf" at the top of the window shows either a scrolling view of all your book's pages, or a view of all unplaced photos. Drag photos from the book pages in the main window up onto the shelf, or drag other photos from the shelf into blank spots in the book. Use the Autoflow button to automatically place all remaining photos on the shelf into new pages in the book.

4.
Enter Titles and Descriptions

Most book styles provide areas for you to enter titles, comments, and page numbers . The titles and comments come from the contents of those fields on each of the pictures in the Organize view; now do you see why it was a good idea to assign titles and comments to all your photos?

You can change the titles and comments for each of your pictures in Edit Book view. Click a Title or Comments field on any of the layout pages; iPhoto highlights the field so you can type in it. Use the Zoom slider to magnify the area in which you're typing.

5.
Sign in with Your Apple ID

When you're ready, click the Buy Book button at the bottom of the window. Your book is assembled digitally into an uploadable package, which can take a few moments; then you are presented with an order form screen, similar to the one you get when you order photo prints.

NOTE

You must be connected to the Internet to order a photo book.

To order a book, you must have an Apple ID with 1-Click ordering turned on. If you have not set up an Apple ID account, refer to 91 Order Photo Prints Online for the procedure for setting up your account and billing information.

6.
Choose a Cover Color and Quantity

For hardcover books, you can select from four different cover colors: black, burgundy, light gray, or navy. The preview image shows you what the book will look like in each color.

Use the Up and Down arrows next to the Quantity field to select how many copies of the book you want to order. The Order Total price is updated dynamically as you adjust the Quantity field. Select the shipping destination and method from the menus at left; if you select Express shipping, it will cost a few dollars extra.

7.
Place Your Order

Click Buy Now when you're ready to order your book. The image data is uploaded to the server; this might take a few moments, depending on the speed of your connection. Your credit card is charged, and the book will be delivered to your shipping address in a few days.
