Introduction

Parts 1 “4 of this book presented strategies for creating a search engine “friendly web site. These strategies help increase your site's search engine visibility, and they also benefit your site's end users.

To keep their search results relevant and accurate, search engines actively work to thwart excessive and unethical optimization tactics. Spamdexing , commonly referred to as spam, is the taking of extreme or excessive measures to achieve top search engine positions . Spam is also the use of any words, HTML code, scripting, or programming on a web page that is not meant to benefit the end user experience.

Many search engine marketing firms spend a great deal of time utilizing spam techniques to gain top search engine positions for their clients, particularly if clients do not want to modify their existing sites to be more search engine friendly. Unfortunately, some web pages that gain top positioning through spam techniques do slip through the search engines' spam filters. However, positions gained from spamming are generally sporadic and short-lived.

Another reason to avoid spam is that the search engines can penalize or permanently ban your web pages from their indices if they detect the usage of spam techniques. Your competitors or human "spam cops" can also spot the use of spam techniques on web pages. Do not discount your competitors . They compete for the same online visibility you desire , and if they can eliminate a site from top positions because of spam, they will not hesitate to report your site to the search engine Spam Police.

If a site is banned or penalized, it is placed on a search engine blacklist. The only way to have your site removed from the blacklist is to contact the search engine staff member who actually banned or penalized your site. Then you must convince that person that you no longer practice the spam techniques that got your site banned. The odds of contacting the exact person who penalized your site are not very high. In addition, if your site is readmitted into the search engine indices, any future web pages from your site are subjected to higher scrutiny.

Spamming the search engines is not an effective use of time or money. The amount of time it takes to "trick" the search engines can be better spent on developing a more effective web site, one that pleases both your target audience and the search engines.
