Review technique

Purpose

To evaluate actions, progress or the whole of the coaching programme as appropriate.

Resources

The amount of time depends on what is being evaluated. You will need paper and pens.

Note to coach

This is a valuable tool for reviewing any activity including the total programme. Consider using it yourself for reviewing your own performance at the end of each coaching session or relationship.

Instructions

Divide a large sheet of paper into three columns. Label these columns from left to right as:

What went well “ How and why “ Next time Divide a second sheet of paper in the same way. This time, label the columns:

What didn t go well “ How and why “ Next time Working with the positives first, brainstorm all the parts of the activity or task that went well. After you have put all of them on the sheet, return to the top one and consider why and how the activity or task worked. In the third column write down what you would do to ensure it worked so well next time. Fill in these two columns for every item on your list.

Now brainstorm all the difficulties or things that didn t go well during the activity or task. Complete the columns as before. At the end of this, you will have a list of actions to do next time, which form the basis of your action plan for improvement.
